Asia and Eastern Europe – overview

In 2004, almost 1.4 million people in Asia and Eastern Europe acquired HIV, bringing the total number of people now living with the virus in the region to an estimated 9.6 million.
In most countries in the region, adult HIV prevalence is still around 1%, although some of the large and populous countries, such as Russia and China, have serious regional epidemics. Injecting drug use and unsafe sex, particularly among young people, are so widespread that even countries with currently low infection rates could see the epidemic soar.
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance (the Alliance) currently works in:

- China
- India
