Prevention activities among men who have sex with men can have a significant impact on the future shape of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, but official indifference or hostility means that few developing countries have prevention and care programmes aimed at this group.

This publication, one of the Key Population series, gives an overview of the issues for men who have sex with men in the context of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. It is designed primarily to support those planning to work in communities in developing countries where few or no organisations are already working with men who have sex with men. Drawing on experiences of the Alliance’s partner organisations in countries including India and Costa Rica, it addresses issues such as why and how men have sex with men, and strategies for developing prevention and care programmes for men.
