There is an increasing understanding that working with specific “key populations” to develop awareness, motivation, skills and peer support is a highly effective way to reduce HIV transmission among those groups, and to slow its spread more widely in the population as a whole.

This draft report summarises the process and findings of participatory site assessments carried out as part of the Frontiers Prevention Project in Cambodia, Ecuador and Andhra Pradesh, India, between November 2002 and March 2003. For each site, the report describes the size and characteristics of the key populations, their HIV-related needs and existing services, and how work was carried out to design sites and interventions, and to mobilise key groups for prevention work.
