There is an increasing awareness that if HIV/AIDS strategies are to be effective, they need to take into account the complexity and specific circumstances of each individual and community in their vulnerability to HIV infection. This is most effectively achieved through community participation.

This report draws on the work of Alliance linking organisations and partners in Bangladesh, Cambodia and Sri Lanka to strengthen participatory approaches to their community assessments prior to project design. Its recommendations include enabling communities to define their own needs and aspirations, and involving them in all stages of project design, implementation and evaluation.
