Despite growing evidence that in South Asia women are disproportionately vulnerable to HIV/AIDS, their awareness of the threat is low: 60 per cent of women in India have never heard of AIDS. The growing numbers of women becoming infected with the virus are fuelled by gender norms and inequality in areas such as unequal access and control over resources, limited decision making, and the experience of violence.

This publication, produced by India HIV/AIDS Alliance, looks at the gendered impact of HIV, drawing on its own research and experience, that of its lead partners in India and information from the International Centre for Research on Women. It argues that the key to tackling the underlying causes of women’s vulnerability to HIV/AIDS is to listen carefully to women’s voices and engage closely with them.
